A lesson about Belize

I will be seeing the above sign at the airport tomorrow....welcoming me to Belize! I thought I would take a few minutes to tell you a little bit about Belize and the district we will be staying and working in.

The Flag of Belize

We will be staying in Orange Walk, Belize. Here is a little blurb about Orange Walk from http://www.belize.com/

ORANGE WALK DISTRICT

It's affectionately called " Sugar City ". Located about 55 miles north along the northern Highway, Orange Walk is a drive of about 65 minutes from Belize City . The country's only tollbooth signals the entrance to Orange Walk Town , and after paying the small toll of about US.35cents, one immediately notices two distinctive sites: the scenic New River with its tour guide operators hugging its banks and the smokestacks of the sugar mill. Sugar, though, no longer reigns supreme in Orange Walk. In addition to the economic boost from ecotourism, there has been agricultural diversification in recent years. This, for example, has seen the recent introduction of fields of soybean planted. The year 2002 saw farmers who had diversified into soybean production looking to harvest two million pounds for the year. Orange Walk is also important for its production of dairy products, citrus fruits, beef and rum production.

Am I totally boring you yet??? If you are still with me, here are a few pictures that I found on the Internet of the hospital where we will be working at....

And this is the hotel where we will be staying.....remember we are the lucky ones this year. Most people are staying with families in their homes....which could mean no A/C, mosquitoes, and no hot water. We are living the life with A/C and cable TV....

You can't see it in this picture, but to the left of the hotel is the river....you know where crocs hang out!!!

Looks like they have made a few improvements since the last time we stayed there....

Okay....I am leaving in the morning! I can't wait to go on this trip....looking so forward to it!! Especially since 2 of my besties are going along too!! I will take tons of pictures and post them as soon as I can when I get home. My flight gets in Monday night.

Until next time....
