Hawaii Day 6- A Day of Remembrance

Steve set the alarm for the crack of dawn and had us up and out of the hotel very EARLY!!  We were headed to the Pearl Harbor Memorial

I do recommend getting there early to make sure you get your free USS Arizona tour tickets.  We arrived at 7:15am and our tickets were for 8:30am.  This gave us some time to wander around the visitor’s center….

We saw the most interesting tree while we were walking around the visitor’s center….

When our time was called, we headed into a theater to watch a 23 minute video giving the history leading up to the bombing of Pearl Harbor and the events of that day December 7, 1941.  After the video we were loaded on a boat and headed towards the USS Arizona Memorial.

There are 21 windows in the memorial to signify a 21 gun salute for the fallen men that are still down in the ship.

This next picture shows the oil still coming to the surface from the ship….they are known as the “black tears”.

It was a somber experience…. a little eerie being on the memorial.

We headed back to the visitor’s center and went on to tour the USS Bowfin Submarine still set up as it was back in WWII.

We had a great morning at Pearl Harbor….it was a huge learning experience, even for Steve and I.  We all really enjoyed it.
